RESUMO

Ion chromatography (IC) is a novel high performance liquid chromatographic technique that is suitable for the separation and analysis of ionic substances in different matrix samples. Since 1975, it has been widely used in many fields, such as the environment, energy, food, and medicine. IC compensates for the separation limitations of traditional gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography and can realize the qualitative analysis and quantitative detection of strongly polar components. This chromatographic technique features not only simple operations but also rapid analysis. The sensors used in IC are characterized by high sensitivity and selectivity, and the technique can simultaneously separate and determine multiple components. Several advances in IC instrumentation and chromatographic theories have been developed in recent years. IC can analyze various types of samples, including ions, sugars, amino acids, and organic acids (bases). Chinese herbal medicines are typically characterized by highly complex chemical compositions and may contain carbohydrates, proteins, alkaloids, and other active components. They also contain toxic residues such as sulfur dioxide, which may be produced during the processing of medicinal materials. Therefore, the analysis and elucidation of the precise chemical constituents of Chinese herbal medicines present key problems that must be resolved in modern Chinese herbal medicine research. In this context, IC has become an important method for analyzing and identifying the complex components of Chinese herbal medicines because this method is suitable for detecting a single active ingredients among complex components. This paper introduces the different types and principles of IC as well as research progress in this technique. As the applications of IC-based methods in pharmaceutical science, cell biology, and microbiology increase, further development is necessary to expand the applications of this technique. The development of innovative techniques has enabled IC technologies to achieve higher analytical sensitivity, better selectivity, and wider application. The components of Chinese herbal medicines can be divided into endogenous and exogenous components according to their source: endogenous components include glycosides, amino acids, and organic acids, while exogenous components include toxic residues such as sulfur dioxide. Next, the applications of IC to the complex components of Chinese herbal medicines in recent decades are summarized. The most commonly used IC technologies and methods include ion exchange chromatography and conductivity detection. The advantages of IC for the analysis of alkaloids have been demonstrated. This method exhibits better characteristics than traditional analytical methods. However, the applications of IC for the speciation analysis of inorganic anions are limited. Moreover, few reports on the direct application of the technique for the determination of the main active substances in Chinese herbal medicines, including flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and steroids, have been reported. Finally, this paper reviews new IC technologies and their application progress in Chinese herbal medicine, focusing on their prospects for the effective separation and analysis of complex components. In particular, we discuss the available sample (on-line) pretreatment technologies and explore possible technologies for the selective and efficient enrichment and separation of different components. Next, we assess innovative research on solid-phase materials that can improve the separation effect and analytical sensitivity of IC. We also describe the features of multidimensional chromatography, which combines the advantages of various chromatographic techniques. This review provides a theoretical reference for the further development of IC technology for the analysis of the complex chemical components of Chinese herbal medicines.

RESUMO

In this study, the levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were measured indoors and outdoors using passive samplers in Tymar village (20 homes), an industrial area, and Haji Wsu (15 homes), a non-industrial region, in the summer and the winter seasons. In comparison to Haji Wsu village, the results showed that Tymar village had higher and more significant mean SO2 and NO2 concentrations indoors and outdoors throughout both the summer and winter seasons. The mean outdoor concentration of SO2 was the highest in summer, while the mean indoor NO2 concentration was the highest in winter in both areas. The ratio of NO2 indoors to outdoors was larger than one throughout the winter at both sites. Additionally, the performance of machine learning (ML) approaches: multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), and random forest (RF) were compared in predicting indoor SO2 concentrations in both the industrial and non-industrial areas. Factor analysis (FA) was conducted on different indoor and outdoor meteorological and air quality parameters, and the resulting factors were employed as inputs to train the models. Cross-validation was applied to ensure reliable and robust model evaluation. RF showed the best predictive ability in the prediction of indoor SO2 for the training set (RMSE = 2.108, MAE = 1.780, and R2 = 0.956) and for the unseen test set (RMSE = 4.469, MAE = 3.728, and R2 = 0.779) values compared to other studied models. As a result, it was observed that the RF model could successfully approach the nonlinear relationship between indoor SO2 and input parameters and provide valuable insights to reduce exposure to this harmful pollutant.

RESUMO

We aimed to evaluate the association between air pollutants and mortality risk in patients with acute aortic dissection (AAD) in a longitudinal cohort and to explore the potential mechanisms of adverse prognosis induced by fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Air pollutants data, including PM2.5, PM10.0, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), were collected from official monitoring stations, and multivariable Cox regression models were applied. Single-cell sequencing and proteomics of aortic tissue were conducted to explore the potential mechanisms. In total, 1,267 patients with AAD were included. Exposure to higher concentrations of air pollutants was independently associated with an increased mortality risk. The high-PM2.5 group carried approximately 2 times increased mortality risk. There were linear associations of PM10, NO2, CO, and SO2 exposures with long-term mortality risk. Single-cell sequencing revealed an increase in mast cells in aortic tissue in the high-PM2.5 exposure group. Enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes identified the inflammatory response as one of the main pathways, with IL-17 and TNF signaling pathways being among the top pathways. Analysis of proteomics also identified these pathways. This study suggests that exposure to higher PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO, and SO2 are associated with increased mortality risk in patients with AAD. PM2.5-related activation and degranulation of mast cells may be involved in this process.

RESUMO

Robust empirical assessments of the long-term cumulative global effects of free trade and economic globalization on the environment are limited. This account fills this gap by constructing a dynamic computable general equilibrium model to estimate the environmental effects of a milestone in the recent history of trade liberalization: China's 20-year World Trade Organization (WTO) accession. The modeling shows that China's accession could have resulted in an increase in the global cumulative greenhouse gases (GHGs), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by roughly 14,000 Mt CO2-eq, 64 Mt, and 46 Mt, respectively. The global production scale effect contributed to most of these estimated increases. The regional total output composition effect also caused higher emissions. Meanwhile, the sectoral output composition effect helped reduce total emissions to a limited extent. Fortunately, a package of emission abatement measures led to a decrease in emission factors and a drop in the global cumulative emissions of GHGs, SO2, and NOx. The findings suggest that to enjoy the free trade and economic globalization benefits and minimize the induced emission increases, it is vitally important to systemically reduce emissions across the entire economy and nurture a low-carbon trade regime.

RESUMO

This study examines the feasibility of replacing SO2 in a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wine with a green tea extract. The treatments included the control with no preservatives (C), the addition of green tea extract at 0.1 and 0.2 g/L (T1 and T2), and an SO2 treatment at 50 mg/L (T3). Five monomeric phenolic compounds were detected in the green tea extract used for the experiment, and their concentrations ranged in the order (-)-epigallocatechin gallate > (-)-epigallocatechin > (-)-epicatechin > (-)-epicatechin gallate > gallic acid. At the studied addition rates, these green tea-derived phenolic compounds contributed to ∼70% of the antioxidant capacity (ABTS), ∼71% of the total phenolic index (TPI), and âˆ¼ 84% of tannin concentration (MCPT) of the extract dissolved in a model wine solution. Among wine treatments, T1 and T2 significantly increased the wine's colour absorbance at 420 nm, MCPT, gallic acid and total monomeric phenolic content. TPI and ABTS were significantly higher in wines with preservatives (i.e., T2 > T1 â‰… T3 > C, p < 0.05). These variations were observed both two weeks after the treatments and again after five months of wine aging. Additionally, an accelerated browning test and a quantitative sensory analysis of wine colour and mouthfeel attributes were performed after 5 months of wine aging. When exposed to excessive oxygen and high temperature (50 °C), T1 and T2 exhibited ∼29% and 24% higher browning capacity than the control, whereas T3 reduced the wine's browning capacity by ∼20%. Nonetheless, the results from sensory analysis did not show significant variations between the treatments. Thus, using green tea extract to replace SO2 at wine bottling appears to be a viable option, without inducing a negative impact on the perceptible colour and mouthfeel attributes of Sauvignon Blanc wine.

RESUMO

Sulfite is one of the main existing forms of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in living system, which has been recognized as an endogenous mediator in inflammation. Evidence has accumulated to show that abnormal level of sulfite is associated with many inflammatory diseases, including neurological diseases and cancers. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe named QX-OA was designed and synthesized to detect sulfite. QX-OA was constructed by choosing quinolinium-xanthene as the fluorophore and levulinate as the specific and relatively steady recognition reaction. The probe showed remarkable green turn-on signal at 550 nm, together with high sensitivity (90-fold) and excellent selectivity to sulfite over other possible interfering species. In the meantime, QX-OA was successfully applied to visualize endogenous and exogenous sulfite in Hela cells. In the LPS-induced inflammation model, QX-OA could visualize the dose-dependent increase of sulfite level (0-2 mg/mL). Consequently, QX-OA was determined to be a potential method for detecting sulfite in pre-clinical diagnosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cardiomyocyte senescence is an important contributor to cardiovascular diseases and can be induced by stressors including DNA damage, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic regulation, etc. However, the underlying mechanisms for the development of cardiomyocyte senescence remain largely unknown. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is produced endogenously by aspartate aminotransferase 2 (AAT2) catalysis and plays an important regulatory role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. The present study aimed to explore the effect of endogenous SO2 on cardiomyocyte senescence and the underlying molecular mechanisms. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We interestingly found a substantial reduction in the expression of AAT2 in the heart of aged mice in comparison to young mice. AAT2-knockdowned cardiomyocytes exhibited reduced SO2 content, elevated expression levels of Tp53, p21Cip/Waf, and p16INk4a, enhanced SA-ß-Gal activity, and elevated level of γ-H2AX foci. Notably, supplementation with a SO2 donor ameliorated the spontaneous senescence phenotype and DNA damage caused by AAT2 deficiency in cardiomyocytes. Mechanistically, AAT2 deficiency suppressed the sulphenylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) facilitated its nuclear translocation and DNA-binding capacity. Conversely, a mutation in the cysteine (Cys) 259 residue of STAT3 blocked SO2-induced STAT3 sulphenylation and subsequently prevented the inhibitory effect of SO2 on STAT3-DNA-binding capacity, DNA damage, and cardiomyocyte senescence. Additionally, cardiomyocyte (cm)-specific AAT2 knockout (AAT2cmKO) mice exhibited a deterioration in cardiac function, cardiomegaly, and cardiac aging, whereas supplementation with SO2 donors mitigated the cardiac aging and remodeling phenotypes in AAT2cmKO mice. CONCLUSION: Downregulation of the endogenous SO2/AAT2 pathway is a crucial pathogenic mechanism underlying cardiomyocyte senescence. Endogenous SO2 modifies STAT3 by sulphenylating Cys259, leading to the inhibition of DNA damage and the protection against cardiomyocyte senescence.

RESUMO

This study presents a novel approach that integrates ozone-driven chemical oxidation to convert NO into soluble NO2, followed by the simultaneous absorption of NO2 and SO2 into a CaCO3-based slurry using the redox catalyst potassium iodide (KI). Using cyclic voltammetry, we demonstrate the redox properties of the I2/2I- couple, which facilitates NO2 reduction into soluble NO2- and catalyst regeneration through sulfite (SO32-)-driven reduction, thus establishing a closed catalytic cycle within the components of flue gas. In lab-scale wet-scrubbing tests, we explore the effect of various operational parameters (i.e., KI concentration, pH, and SO2 concentration), with a 15 h stability test demonstrating >60% NOx and >99% SO2 removal efficiency when the pH is controlled between 7.5 and 8.5. A successful pilot-scale implementation conducted at an inlet flow rate of 1000 m3 h-1 further confirmed the reproducibility of the proposed redox-catalytic cycle. Our study offers a cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable solution for effectively mitigating NOx and SO2 emissions at low temperatures.

RESUMO

Acid-sensitive CdTe quantum dots-loaded alginate hydrogel (CdTe QDs-AH) beads were designed for the visual detection of SO2 residues. As proof of concept, two types of CdTe QDs were selected as model probes and embedded in AH beads. The entire test was performed within 25 min in a modified double-layer test tube with one bead fixed above the sample solution. Adding citric acid and heating at 70 ℃ for 20 min transformed the sulfites in the solution into SO2 gas, which then quenched the fluorescence of the CdTe QDs-AH beads. Using this assay, qualitative, naked-eye detection of SO2 residues was achieved in the concentration range of 25-300 ppm, as well as precise quantification was possible based on the difference in the average fluorescence brightness of the beads before and after the reaction. Five food types were successfully analysed using this method, which is simpler and more economical than existing methods, and does not require complex pretreatment.

RESUMO

The Third Pole (TP) is a high mountain region in the world, and is well-known for its pristine environment, but recent development activities in the region have degraded its air quality. Here, we investigate the spatial and temporal changes of the air pollutants ammonia (NH3), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) in TP, and reveal their sources using satellite measurements and emission inventory. We observe a clear seasonal cycle of NH3 in TP, with high values in summer and low values in winter. The intense agriculture activities in the southern TP are the cause of high NH3 (6-8 × 1016 molec./cm2) there. Similarly, CO shows a distinct seasonal cycle with high values in spring in the southeast TP due to biomass burning. In addition, the eastern boundary of TP in the Sichuan and Qinghai provinces also show high values of CO (about 1.5 × 1018 mol/cm2), primarily owing to the industrial activities. There is no seasonal cycle found for SO2 distribution in TP, but relatively high values (8-10 mg/m2) are observed in its eastern boundary. The high-altitude pristine regions of inner TP are also getting polluted because of increased human activities in and around TP, as we estimate positive trends in CO (0.5-1.5 × 1016 mol/cm2/yr) there. In addition, positive trends are also found in NH3 (0.025 × 1016 molec./cm2/yr) during 2008-2020 in most regions of TP and SO2 (about 0.25-0.75 mg/m2/yr) in the Sichuan and Qinghai region during 2000-2020. As revealed by the emission inventory, there are high anthropogenic emissions of NH3, SO2 and CO within TP. There are emissions of pollutants from energy sectors, oil and refinery, agriculture waste burning and manure management within TP. These anthropogenic activities accelerate the ongoing development in TP, but severely erode its environment.

RESUMO

Over the last four decades, the Chinese government has predominantly employed emission fees as a regulatory strategy to mitigate pollution from firms. However, the effectiveness of escalating emission fee rates on the emission levels of Chinese firms has not been examined. This study utilizes data from more than 80,000 Chinese firms spanning 2004-2013, employing difference-in-differences models to assess the effects of rising emission fee rates on firm emissions. The findings indicate the following: (1) Increased emission fee rates substantially reduce sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand emissions among Chinese firms; (2) These heightened fees encourage firms to implement both end-of-pipe treatment and source control for sulfur dioxide and end-of-pipe treatment for chemical oxygen demand; (3) The emission reduction effects vary according to firm ownership and size. This research offers empirical evidence on the efficacy of emission fee systems and provides valuable insights for developing market incentive-based environmental regulations in the future.

RESUMO

Cadmium-contaminated water and food are seriously hazardous to the human health, especially liver injury. To understand the entanglement relationship between cadmium ion (Cd2+)-induced liver injury and the biomarker sulfur dioxide (SO2), a reliable bioanalytical tool is urgently needed, detecting SO2 to diagnose and evaluate the extent of liver injury in vivo. Herein, based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism, a novel SO2-tunable NIR ratiometric fluorescent probe (SMP) was developed, it was used to diagnose and treat liver injury induced by Cd2+ in biosystems. Specifically, it was constructed by conjugating a NIR dicyanoisophorone with a NIR benzopyranate as the donor and acceptor, respectively, and the ratiometric response of SO2- regulated by the Michael addition reaction. In addition, SMP exhibits rapid reaction time (<15 s), two well-resolved emission peaks (68 nm) with less cross-talk between channels for high imaging resolution, superior selectivity, and low limit of detection (LOD=80.3 nM) for SO2 detection. Impressively, SMP has been successfully used for intracellular ratiometric imaging of Cd2+-induced SO2 and diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation in liver injury mice models with satisfactory results. Therefore, SMP may provide a powerful molecular tool for revealing the occurrence and development relationship between SO2 and Cd2+-induced liver injury. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Cadmium ions are one of the well-known toxic environmental pollutants, which are enriched in the human body through inhalation of cadmium-contaminated air or from the food chain, leading to damage in various organs, especially liver injury. Therefore, we developed a novel fluorescent probe that can specifically detect SO2 in Cd2+-induced liver injury, which is critically important for the diagnosis and evaluation of Cd2+-induced liver injury diseases. The specific detection of SO2 of this probe has been successfully demonstrated in live HepG2 cells and Cd2+-induced liver injury mice.

RESUMO

Soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan have a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms than nondeployed military personnel and some have been shown to have a constellation of findings on lung biopsy termed post-deployment respiratory syndrome (PDRS). Since many of the subjects in this cohort reported exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2), we developed a model of repetitive exposure to SO2 in mice that phenocopies many aspects of PDRS, including adaptive immune activation, airway wall remodeling, and pulmonary vascular (PV) disease. Although abnormalities in small airways were not sufficient to alter lung mechanics, PV remodeling resulted in the development of pulmonary hypertension and reduced exercise tolerance in SO2-exposed mice. SO2 exposure led to increased formation of isolevuglandins (isoLGs) adducts and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) acetylation in endothelial cells, which were attenuated by treatment with the isoLG scavenger 2-hydroxybenzylamine acetate (2-HOBA). In addition, 2-HOBA treatment or Siruin-3 overexpression in a transgenic mouse model prevented vascular remodeling following SO2 exposure. In summary, our results indicate that repetitive SO2 exposure recapitulates many aspects of PDRS and that oxidative stress appears to mediate PV remodeling in this model. Together, these findings provide new insights regarding the critical mechanisms underlying PDRS.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We developed a mice model of "post-deployment respiratory syndrome" (PDRS), a condition in Veterans with unexplained exertional dyspnea. Our model successfully recapitulates many of the pathological and physiological features of the syndrome, revealing involvement of the ROS-isoLGs-Sirt3-SOD2 pathway in pulmonary vasculature pathology. Our study provides additional knowledge about effects and long-term consequences of sulfur dioxide exposure on the respiratory system, serving as a valuable tool for future PDRS research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Environmental pollution is an emerging global public health problem across the world and causes serious threats to ecosystems, human health, and the planet. This study is designed to explore the impact of environmental pollution particulate matter PM2.5, PM10, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) on cognitive functions in students from schools located in or away from air-polluted areas. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study, two schools were selected: one was located near a traffic-polluted area (school #1), and the second was in an area away from the traffic-polluted area (school #2). In this study, a total of 300 students were recruited: 150 (75 male and 75 female) students from school #1 located in a traffic-polluted area, and 150 students (75 male and 75 female) from school #2 located away from a traffic polluted area. The overall average age of students was 13.53±1.20 years. The students were selected based on age, gender, health status, height, weight, BMI, ethnicity, and homogenous socio-economic and educational status. The pollutants PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, O3, and SO2 were recorded in the surrounding environment. The overall mean concentration of environmental pollutants in school #1 was 35.00±0.65 and in school #2 was 29.95±0.32. The levels of airborne particles were measured, and the cognitive functions were recorded using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). The students performed the cognitive functions tasks, including the attention switching task (AST), choice reaction time (CRT), and motor screening task (MOT). RESULTS: The results revealed that the AST-Mean 928.34±182.23 vs. 483.79±146.73 (p=0.001), AST-mean congruent 889.12±197.12 vs. 473.30±120.11 (p=0.001), AST-mean in-congruent 988.98±201.27  vs. 483.87±144.57 (p=0.001), CRT-Mean 721.36±251.72  vs. 418.17±89.71 (p=0.001), and MOT-Mean 995.07±394.37 vs. 526.03±57.83 (p=0.001) were significantly delayed among the students who studied in school located in the traffic polluted area compared to students who studied in school which was located away from the traffic-polluted area. CONCLUSIONS: Environmental pollution was significantly higher in motor vehicle-congested areas. Cognitive functions were impaired among the students who were studying in a school located in a polluted area. The results further revealed that the students studying in schools located in environmentally polluted areas have attention, thinking, and decision-making abilities related to cognitive function impairment.

RESUMO

The vertical environmental reform in China has led to the change of environmental management system from territorial management model to vertical management model. This study uses the data of 263 prefecture-level cities in China to examine the effects of China's vertical environmental reform on pollutant emissions, including industrial sulfur dioxide, wastewater emissions, and industrial fumes emissions. The findings demonstrate that vertical environmental reform resulted in a reduction in industrial sulfur dioxide, wastewater emissions, and industrial fumes emissions. And the governance effects is gradually enhanced with the passage of time, which are long-lasting effects. The above conclusions are still valid after a series of robust estimates including mitigating selection bias, placebo test, changing the dependent variables, and mitigating heterogeneous treatment effects. According to heterogeneity analysis, the vertical environmental reform has reduced the increase of pollutants caused by financial pressure and official associations, and treats border pollution problems more effectively. Under the decentralized governance system, the implementation of vertical environmental management helps to reduce local pollutant emissions. This conclusion provides the latest evidence from China for the academic debate on the advantages and disadvantages of territorial environmental management and vertical environmental management and also provides policy implications for the government's environmental governance.

RESUMO

Some studies have shown the effect of air pollution on migraine. However, it needs to be confirmed in larger-scale studies, as scientific evidence is scarce regarding the association between air pollution and migraine. Therefore, this systematic review aims to determine whether there are associations between outdoor air pollution and migraine. A literature search was performed in Scopus, Medline (via PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science. A manual search for resources and related references was also conducted to complete the search. All observational studies investigating the association between ambient air pollution and migraine, with inclusion criteria, were entered into the review. Fourteen out of 1417 identified articles met the inclusion criteria and entered the study. Among the gaseous air pollutants, there was a correlation between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (78.3% of detrimental relationships) and carbon monoxide (CO) (68.0% of detrimental relationships) and migraine, but no apparent correlation has been found for sulfur dioxide (SO2) (21.2% of detrimental relationships) and ozone (O3) (55.2% of detrimental relationships). In the case of particulate air pollutants, particulate matter with a diameter of 10 µm or less (PM10) (76.0% of detrimental relationships) and particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM2.5) (61.3% of detrimental relationships) had relationships with migraine. In conclusion, exposure to NO2, CO, PM10, and PM2.5 is associated with migraine headaches, while no conclusive evidence was found to confirm the correlation between O3 and SO2 with migraine. Further studies with precise methodology are recommended in different cities around the world for all pollutants with an emphasis on O3 and SO2.

RESUMO

Innovation is the first power to drive the county's green and low-carbon. It is crucial to explore the impact of innovation on air pollution from the perspective of counties at the bottom of the administrative division hierarchy. The article is aimed at exploring the direct impact effects, spatial spillover effects, impact mechanism pathways, non-linear relationships, and cost-benefits of innovation drive on air pollution in counties. To this end, based on the collection of county-level data from 2007 to 2020 in mainland China, the article constructs a fixed-effects model, a dynamic panel model, and a spatial Durbin model for analysis. For every 1% increase in the quantity of innovation, the county SO2 emission concentration decreases by 0.2% on average; for every 1% increase in the quality of innovation, the county SO2 emission concentration decreases by 0.3% on average. When the county innovation quantity driver increases by one standard deviation, the county SO2 concentration decreases by an average of 0.29%; when the county innovation quality driver each standard deviation increases, the county SO2 concentration is reduced by 0.33% on average. The significant entry of high-end factors, the increased frequency of regulation by the environmental protection department, and the increasing efficiency of energy use are the important mechanism pathways for innovation-driven reduction of air pollution in counties. There is no significant "(inverted) U-shaped" relationship between innovation-driven air pollution in the county samples. There is a negative spatial spillover effect of the innovation quality drive on air pollution control in all Chinese county samples. Innovation to drive the declining size of the county's sulfur dioxide can bring about one billion yuan (about 139.81 million U.S. dollars) in comprehensive economic benefits. In the coming period, county governments should build a new pattern of "blue sky and white clouds" with neighboring regions in terms of spatial agglomeration of high-end elements, green transformation and utilization of energy, and intelligent monitoring and supervision of pollution.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An evolving body of literature indicates exposure to air pollutants is associated with adverse health outcomes in dialysis patients. As the prevalence of kidney disease increases, understanding the role of environmental agents on the health of dialysis patients is critical to reducing global morbidity and mortality. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified 16 publications that investigated associations between pollutants including particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and ozone (O 3 ) and health outcomes among dialysis patients. Eight studies examined the effects of particulate matter (PM) and four studies examined the effects CO exposure on dialysis patients. Exposure to PM was consistently associated with outcomes including all-cause mortality and a smaller body of literature suggested relationships with subclinical outcomes. Exposure to CO was associated with all-cause mortality, generalized inflammation, and uremic pruritus. An additional four studies examined multiple pollutant exposures including NO 2 , SO 2 , and O 3 and reported associations with all-cause mortality in dialysis patients. SUMMARY: This review emphasized the nascent literature that demonstrates consistent relationships between air pollutant exposure and adverse outcomes among dialysis patients. Further research is needed to assess the impact of air pollutants, including how co-exposures will impact dialysis patient health.

RESUMO

This ecological study examined the individual and joint impacts of natural-human factors on the spatial patterns of maternal and child health status in China at the provincial scale in 2020. We considered natural factors (forest coverage, average temperature, and total sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions) and human factors (economic development, urbanization, healthcare access, and education level). We combined maternal, infant, and under-five mortality rates into a composite maternal and child health index using the entropy method. The spatial autocorrelation analysis of this index highlighted distinct health patterns across provinces, whereas the geodetector method assessed the effects of natural-human factors on the patterns. A notable east-central-west stepwise decline in health status was observed. Global Moran's I showed positive spatial clustering, with high-high clustering areas in the Yangtze River Delta and low-low clustering areas in western regions. Factor detection identified eight significant natural-human factors impacting maternal and child health, with total sulfur dioxide emission density having the greatest impact. The interaction between average schooling years and total sulfur dioxide emission notably affected maternal and child health patterns. The study concludes that natural-human factors critically affect the spatial distribution of maternal and child health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a common gaseous pollutant that significantly threatens environmental pollution and human health. Meanwhile, viscosity is an essential parameter of the intracellular microenvironment, manipulating many physiological roles such as nutrient transport, metabolism, signaling regulation and apoptosis. Currently, most of the fluorescent probes used for detecting SO2 derivatives and viscosity are single-emission probes or probes based on the ICT mechanism, which suffer from short emission wavelengths, small Stokes shifts or susceptibility to environmental background. Therefore, the development of powerful high-performance probes for real-time monitoring of sulfur dioxide derivatives and viscosity is of great significance for human health. RESULTS: In this research, we designed the fluorescent probe QQC to detect SO2 derivatives and viscosity based on FRET platform with quinolinium salt as donor and quinolinium-carbazole as acceptor. QQC exhibited a ratiometric fluorescence response to SO2 with a low detection limit (0.09 µM), large Stokes shift (186 nm) and high energy transfer efficiency (95 %), indicating that probe QQC had good sensitivity and specificity. In addition, QQC was sensitive to viscosity, with an 9.10-folds enhancement of orange fluorescence and an excellent linear relationship (R2 = 0.98) between the logarithm of fluorescence intensity at 592 nm and viscosity. Importantly, QQC could not only recognize SO2 derivatives in real water samples and food, but also detect viscosity changes caused by food thickeners and thereby had broad market application prospects. SIGNIFICANCE: We have developed a ratiometric fluorescent probe based on the FRET platform for detecting sulfur dioxide derivatives and viscosity. QQC could not only successfully detect SO2 derivatives in food and water samples, but also be made into test strips for detecting HSO3-/SO32- solution. In addition, the probe was also used to detect viscosity changes caused by food thickeners. Therefore, this novel probe had significant value in food and environmental detection applications.
